DIY Flower Backdrops

Easy DIY Floral Backdrop

Here is a lovely DIY tutorial on how to do your own floral backdrop for your ceremony. And BONUS! We’ve given all the info on the actual costs to do this at three different price points!

Despite what a lot of Pinterest images lead you to believe, floral design is NOT rocket science. You’re the human, it’s the flower… Standard natural hierarchy here people!

This video tutorial shows you step by step how to create a beautiful flower backdrop for your wedding ceremony. Once the ceremony is done, you could even repurpose it as a photo booth backdrop. Win win!

So the easy/fun part is creating the backdrop but I know you're wondering about the big question…

What is this going to cost me?

To be honest, it depends on how extravagant you want to be. But we will break it down and give you true costs and alternatives so you could create this piece with a budget starting from $345—including the backdrop frame!

Full disclosure, most wholesale flowers are not sold by the stem but by the bunch. The recipe for the backdrop is by the stem and we would use the leftover stems from the wholesale bunch in other areas of the wedding.

First things first: Supplies. Here’s exactly what we used in this video tutorial:

White Grid: $150 from Amazon
(You could always sell it after your wedding or let other brides use it!)

Floral Foam Garland: $40

Teeny Tiny Zip Ties: $6

Snips: $10

Supplies Total: $206

And here are the exact floral ingredients shown in the video tutorial:

Flower Recipe:

Greenery

1 bunch(5) Robellini - $15 per bunch

½  bunch Salal - $12 per bunch

½ bunch Eucalyptus - $16 per bunch

½ bunch Leather Leaf - $10 per bunch

Affordable Flowers:

7 Burgundy SnapDragons - $2.5 per stem

10 Mauve Stock - $1.5 - $ 1.8 per stem

20 Terra-Cotta Carnations - $1 - $1.25 per stem

12 White Roses - $2.2 - $2.5 per stem

6 Choral Hypericum Berry - $1.75 per stem

½ bunch Chamomile - $22 per bunch

Pricey Flowers:

5 Spray roses - $3 per stem

6 Dahlias - $3- $4 per stem

12 Garden Roses - $5 - $6 per stem

Total Cost

Floral Total: $245

Supplies Total: $206

Grand Total: $451

If $450 is pushing your budget a little too far, we wanted to give you some options of different flowers you could use to bring the total cost down.

Mid-Budget Option

Alternatives to the Pricey Flowers:

Swap out the spray roses for mini carnations and get a lot more bang for your buck.

  • Spray rose - $3 per stem vs. Mini Carnation - $1 per stem

Use chrysanthemums or cremones instead of dahlias. Half the cost and a longer-lasting flower!

  • Dahlia - $3 - $4 per stem vs. Cremone - $1.5 - $1.7 per stem

Use standard roses instead of garden roses. While garden roses are beautiful, they are among the most expensive flowers out there. You can get beautiful “standard” roses that look almost identical to garden roses at half the cost. We’d suggest using the Shimmer Rose or the Shukrani Rose in lieu of a Juliette Garden Rose.

  • Garden Rose - $5 - $6 per stem vs. Standard rose $2.2 - $2.5 per stem.

Making these substitutions would save you $61, bringing the total cost to $390 including all of your supplies.

Budget-Savvy Option

And because we want to give you ALL of the cost-saving alternatives, here’s an option that will:

  • Give you a similar look

  • Use less flowers

  • Save you the most money

  • Require the least amount of work to make

  1. Swap out the floral foam garland for a pre-made greenery garland. This means half of the work is already done for you, and then you’ll just need to add a few flowers on top. Bonus! This one is the most eco-friendly of the options because it does not require a floral foam garland.

  2. Use the more cost-conscious flower options listed below to achieve the same look and feel as the video tutorial.

  • 5 Burgundy SnapDragons - $2.5 per stem

  • 5 Mauve Stock - $1.5 - $ 1.8 per stem

  • 15 Terra-Cotta Carnations - $1 - $1.25 per stem

  • 10 Shukrani Roses - $2.2 - $2.5 per stem

  • 10 White Roses - $2.2 - $2.5 per stem

  • 5 Choral Hypericum Berry - $1.75 per stem

  • ½ bunch Chamomile - $22 per bunch  - $11

  • 5-foot greenery garland $75 ($15 / linear foot)
