Protea

Protea

Protea are bold, sculptural blooms known for their large heads, sturdy stems, and long-lasting nature. They add dramatic focal impact and a modern, textured look to DIY arrangements. Expect natural variation in head size, color tone, and petal/spike formation depending on the variety (King, Queen, Pink Ice, Pincushion, & Blushing Bride.).

Typical bunch size: 1–5 stems (varies widely by variety and farm).

DIY Care & Handling Tips

Unbox immediately upon receiving.

Recut stems and hydrate upright for 6–12 hours; keep in a cool location.

Remove any foliage below the water line.

Stems are woody—use sharp clippers or floral shears for clean cuts.

Very durable, but outer bracts can bend if heavily handled—use gentle pressure.

Keep away from direct heat to prevent drying at the edges.

Protea may continue to open slightly after hydrating; this is normal.

See the DIY Guide for full care instructions.

Best Uses for DIY Weddings

Ideal as focal flowers for bouquets, centerpieces, and statement arrangements.

Excellent for modern, boho, tropical, or textural designs.

Holds up extremely well out of water for short periods—great for bouquets.

Not typically used for boutonnieres due to size and rigidity.

Performs well in indoor and outdoor weddings, including warm climates.

Seasonal Availability

Available year-round, but specific varieties (like King Protea) may have seasonal peaks.

Color and size can vary depending on the time of year.

Availability may change due to climate & crop quality; substitutions may occur based on quality and availability.
