Top 10 Types of Greenery to Use for Your DIY Wedding Flowers

The Best Greenery to Use for Your DIY Wedding Flowers

DIY Wedding flowers can be daunting for so many reasons. And one reason is knowing what flowers to use but people usually forget about the greenery. More recently people have come around to using more greenery or even all greenery but for the most part, they're focusing on the flowers. And rightly so! But as we all know, the more flowers you have the more the price point goes up.

One of the most simple ways to keep costs down is to use a good balance of greenery with your florals. The ratio along with specific varieties can really make an impact on whether or not you stay within your floral budget.

If you are familiar with our process at Bloom Culture, you'll find that we ALWAYS start with greenery. We thought it would be helpful to list our faves and break down why.

Best DIY Wedding Flower Greenery and Why

Not all greenery is created equally. Here are our top faves along with Pro's and Con's for each.

Greenery 1: Salal/Lemon Leaf

Beautiful green color with a waxy feel. Comes in regular and tips sizes.

Pros: Classic broad leaf structure. A little goes a long way, does well out of water, long vase life.

Cons: Can be overwhelming if too much is used.

Greenery 2: Italian Ruscus

Beautiful deep green, slightly shiny leaves. Great length, comes 5 branches per bunch.

Pros: Deep green color ideal for cascade bouquets, arches, table greenery. Does well out of water.

Cons: Length can be inconsistent between bunches.

Greenery 3: Israeli Ruscus

Similar to Italian Ruscus but more like a line flower — rounded leaves off one single stem. Comes 5-8 a bunch.

Pros: Fairly consistent length and color. Does well outside of water.

Cons: Can be hard to work with as it is very rigid.

Greenery 4: Leather Leaf

Very classic greenery, looks like a fern. Large bunches 10+ stems per bunch.

Pros: Very consistent, doesn't need much water — great for arches/arbors. A little goes a long way.

Cons: Some people don't love the fern look with certain wedding flowers.

Greenery 5: Plumosus

Very light and airy greenery known for its feathery appearance.

Pros: Does well out of water, some stems are really long. Great for winter weddings and can be tinted easily.

Cons: Short stems can be too short in some designs. Can shatter when it dries out.

Greenery 6: Nagi

Beautiful deep green color with a waxy feel.

Pros: Classic feel with great deep green color. Similar to Italian Ruscus but shorter and fuller.

Cons: Needs to be in water and can curl if dehydrated.

Greenery 7: Seeded Eucalyptus

Beautiful and creates a lot of texture!

Pros: Texture, great color, great for filling in holes in your design.

Cons: Can be inconsistent — more like a box of chocolate… you never know what you're gonna get!

Greenery 8: Silver Dollar Eucalyptus

Most likely the "Voted most popular" Euc. Named for her giant, silver dollar sized leaves.

Pros: Makes a statement, covers lots of space, great bang for your buck.

Cons: Can take over the show — the leaves are so big they can steal focus.

Greenery 9: Gunni/Parvifolia Eucalyptus

Full, great bang for your buck. The little shoots off one stem are perfect for floral crowns, bouts, bud vases.

Pros: Full and fills in arrangements beautifully. Another workhorse greenery.

Cons: Can curl at the tips and create more of a drape than some want.

Greenery 10: Baby Blue Eucalyptus

TRUE, BABY BLUE, OR SPIRAL EUC. Three names, same euc.

Pros: Smells like the spa, gives you long reach for big arrangements or arbors, wonderful texture and perfect dusty green color.

Cons: Pretty rigid and the linear leaf structure can be hard to work with. The oil can seep into your skin.

  • Unlike flowers, greenery comes in growers bunches and can fluctuate in size.
  • Most bunches are based on weight and can look different depending on the growing season.
  • Greenery is always a great way to help cut down on wedding flower costs!

Finally, I have found a floral company that thinks like me. For a few years now, I have looked for an article of this type – greenery suggestions. Sure, Flower wholesalers have greenery on their website for sale, but there is never – at least I have’t seen, a greenery reference-source such as this. Thanks Bloom Culture for reading my mind!
